"A medieval capital with over 2,000 years of history”"
The Bulgarian capital, Sofia is one of the most historic countries in eastern Europe. Sofia’s churches, parks, and monuments contain over 2,000 years of history, influenced by many of its neighboring countries. The city is constantly growing and developing as a capital and houses several universities and commercial company branches.
We came to Sofia because we needed to stay in Eastern Europe while we waited out our Schengen “out” period. We were unsure what to expect but were pleasantly surprised with the city. Though hardly anyone speaks English, Sofia has plenty of things to do.
We went on several free tours which gave us a better understanding of the city and its history, and enjoyed eating the street food that could be found for as little as 1 lev (50 cents as of July 2016). Sofia is a great city for budget travelers who still want a bigger city feel and we’d recommend it as a place to visit!
